About
Denielle Bassels is a Toronto-born singer, bandleader and songwriter of jazz, blues, and music off the beaten path. Her music career was conceived at the age of 13, when she heard Nina Simone’s “My Baby Just Cares For Me” on the speakers in a crowded HMV store. Since discovering jazz, Bassels has been influenced by singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong, Peggy Lee and Amy Winehouse.
It was when Bassels moved to Switzerland that she fell into performing jazz in clubs. At a Jam one night, she met a band of gypsy players who asked her to improvise to a tune she’d never heard of. “It doesn’t matter, make it up”, they said. And so she did. It was the beginning of many musical adventures. “Sometimes if there were no gigs or after a gig we’d take all
of our equipment to a bar that had no band scheduled and would
just set up without asking anyone,” she recalls. “If the patrons liked the music
we could stay. We always stayed!”...
